This weekend was the 96th Annual Drake Relays but this one was different than the ninety five previous times. Drake Stadium went under serious renovation this past year and they sure got the job done. Jim Duncan Track is now an official Olympic track, which basically means they could host Olympic time trials if they wanted, added a few more seats, and installed lights to allow for night running. During the inaugural Friday night "udner the lights" session they had a parade of all the states represented at the Relays. After Simon Estes sang "God Bless America," while the first ever torch lit just like at the Olympics. The night was ended by a fire works display despite of the rain which had then been falling for several hours. The weather was awful this year but the spirits were still high.
Mr. Sypnewski and the Johnston Track team did had a great performance this year. The 4x800 got 5th and ran their best time of the year...the 4x400 got 5th...the 4x200 got 10th...and the 4x100 got 3rd. Joel Quick anchored every one of those relays too. I love my Dragons but the story of the weekend was Valley and their stud, Brian Collins. They won the 4x1,2,4, and 800 to make Collins a 10 time Drake Relay Champion with one more year to go.
